2-Minute Install
Install as an unpacked extension in Developer Mode with zero complex dependencies or setup.
Install it
ScarCam isn't on the Chrome Web Store, so it installs the way developers test extensions: as an unpacked folder, with developer mode turned on. It takes about two minutes.
Download the zip
Use the Download ScarCam button. It saves a file called scarcam.zip to your Downloads folder.
Unzip it
On Windows, right-click the file and choose Extract All. On Mac, double-click it. Keep the resulting scarcam folder somewhere permanent.
Turn on developer mode
Open your browser's extensions page and switch on Developer mode:
chrome://extensions
edge://extensions
brave://extensions
Load the folder
Click Load unpacked and select the scarcam folder — the one directly containing manifest.json.
Pin it and try it
Click the puzzle-piece icon in your toolbar and pin ScarCam so it's visible. Open the popup, add a file, and flip the switch on.
Common problems & FAQ
If something doesn't match what you're seeing, check here for solutions.
I don't see the ScarCam icon in my toolbar
Installing it doesn't always pin it. Click the puzzle-piece icon at the right of your address bar, find ScarCam in the list, and click the pin next to it. It'll stay visible from then on.
I can't find the puzzle-piece icon or the extensions menu
Click the three dots (⋮) in the top-right of the browser window, then look for Extensions. In Chrome that opens a submenu with Manage Extensions; in Edge and Brave it goes straight to the extensions list.
Or just type chrome://extensions directly into the address bar and press Enter.
I can't find the "Developer mode" switch
In Chrome and Brave, it's a toggle in the top-right of the extensions page, next to "Update". In Edge, it's on the left-hand sidebar, lower down. Once it's on, three new buttons appear, including Load unpacked.
"Load unpacked" is missing, greyed out, or doesn't do anything
This almost always means developer mode is still off — double-check the toggle from the step above.
If developer mode itself is greyed out, the computer is likely managed by a school or workplace that blocks it.
The browser warns the extension "may be unsafe" or isn't from the store
That warning appears on every unpacked, developer-mode extension — it's not specific to ScarCam. It means the extension hasn't gone through the Chrome Web Store's review, not that something's wrong.
The zip file won't open, or says it's damaged
Browsers sometimes flag a fresh download as unverified before letting you open it. Check your downloads bar or Downloads folder for a Keep or Keep anyway option.
I turned the switch on, but my real face still shows
The switch only turns replacement on — it still needs a file to show. Open the popup and either drop in a file or pick one from a synced folder or GIF search. Once a file is selected, the switch takes effect immediately on open tabs.
A video plays fine in the popup but not on the call site
A few sites block video from loading this way due to their own security settings. Images and GIFs aren't affected. If a video won't play on a particular site, try a GIF or image there instead.
It keeps asking me to reconnect my synced folder
Browsers forget folder access after a restart, as a privacy measure — this isn't a bug. Click Reconnect folder in the popup once and it'll stay connected again until the next restart.
The Alt+Shift+C shortcut doesn't do anything
Another extension or program may already use that combination. Go to chrome://extensions/shortcuts to see or change ScarCam's shortcut.
How do I turn it off or uninstall it
To pause it, just flip the switch in the popup off — sites go back to seeing your real camera right away. To remove it completely, go to your browser's extensions page, find ScarCam, and click Remove.

ScarLoc Details & Troubleshooting
Everything you need to know about lookups, privacy, and browser support.
Why drag instead of click?
Bookmarklets are mini JavaScript programs embedded into a bookmark. Clicking it directly on this page won't do anything because there are no active WebRTC calls here. Saving it to your bookmarks lets you run it on any target site!
How does the IP detection work?
When WebRTC connects two peers, it exchanges ICE candidates containing their public reflection (srflx) addresses. ScarLoc listens for these candidate packets, extracts the public IP, and queries free geolocation endpoints.
Which geolocation services does it use?
It includes a built-in automatic failover cascade: it first queries ipwho.is, then falls back to freeipapi.com, and finally ipapi.co if rate-limits or network errors occur.
What if dragging doesn't work on my browser?
Click the Copy bookmarklet code button, create a new bookmark manually in your browser, and paste the code directly into the bookmark's URL or location field.

ScarExec FAQ & Troubleshooting
Common questions about permissions, exports, and execution.
Why do I need to export the extension through Settings?
ScarExec automatically bundles and configures the exact matching WebExtension files for your native version. Exporting directly from Settings ensures your extension and executor executable share the same communication protocol and encryption keys.
Does ScarExec need administrator permissions?
No, standard user privileges are sufficient to run both the executable and the exported unpacked browser extension. Administrator rights are only needed if you choose to export to protected system folders like Program Files.
Can I reload or update the exported extension?
Yes. If you update ScarExec in the future, simply re-export to the same folder and click the small circular Reload icon on the extension card inside chrome://extensions.
What browsers are officially supported?
Any Chromium-based browser supporting Manifest V3 and Developer Mode is fully supported, including Google Chrome, Brave, Microsoft Edge, Opera, and Vivaldi.
